Frequently Asked Questions

  • Lars saunas are hand-built in our workshop from start to finish. No components are preassembled overseas, allowing us to maintain full control over craftsmanship, materials, and construction quality.

We use only premium, natural materials selected to minimize off-gassing when the sauna is heated. Our lumber is sourced from sustainably managed forests in Finland, as well as trusted local mills, quality checked before install.

Our saunas are built just like you would build a house - fully insulated and protected by a continuous vapour barrier that safeguards the structure from moisture, mould, wood rot and the outside elements.

An integrated floor drain - often omitted by North American sauna builders - is essential in Finnish sauna design, allowing moisture to be properly managed during and after use and helping preserve the long-term integrity of the structure.

Our saunas are designed with proper ventilation that introduce fresh oxygen while efficiently removing excess Co2 from our breath. This balanced ventilation supports longer, more comfortable sessions, helps prevent stuffiness and headaches, and maximizes the health benefits of sauna use by maintaining optimal air quality.

  • We use Lunawood ThermoWood because its properties are exceptionally well-suited to sauna environments.

    • Dimensionally stable: Maintains its shape better than untreated wood, minimizing shrinkage, expansion, and warping.

    • Low maintenance: No surface treatment needed; naturally weathers to a beautiful silver tone if left untreated.

    • All-climate performance: Handles humidity and temperature changes without compromising integrity.

    • Sustainable: Made from responsibly sourced Nordic wood, acts as carbon storage, and is fully recyclable.

    • Pure and natural: Free of chemicals, resin, or harmful emissions - even at high sauna temperatures.

You can read more about the benefits of Lunawood here.

Please note: all of our saunas feature Lunawood exterior cladding for optimal performance. For interior cladding and finishes, we can use other woods, such as Western Red Cedar. Prices for alternative materials may vary.

  • While barrel saunas are popular for their appearance and lower upfront cost, their design presents several functional limitations that impact long-term performance and durability. Many barrel saunas lack proper insulation, making it difficult to control heat efficiently and manage moisture over time. As a result, they require more energy to heat and are more susceptible to heat loss, condensation, and premature material degradation.

The curved interior restricts bench height, preventing bathers from sitting at optimal heat levels. Thermal stratification occurs when hot and cold air fail to mix properly, causing hot air to gather at the top while cold air remains at the bottom, resulting in cold feet. In a cubical sauna, higher benches allow for consistent, enveloping heat, something barrel designs may struggle to achieve.

Ventilation is also often compromised in barrel saunas, which can lead to uneven heat distribution and reduced air quality during use.

For these reasons, we focus on cabin-style saunas built using proven Finnish design principles that prioritize performance, comfort, and longevity.

  • Reach out through our contact form or email us at hello@larssauna.ca - we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • After you reach out and details are finalized, we will prepare a final quote for your sauna, including shipping costs. For customers located on the Sunshine Coast, Lower Mainland, or Vancouver Island, our team coordinates freight logistics and crane installation at no additional service cost.

  • First, it is important to assess the site access required to reach your proposed sauna location. For customers on the Sunshine Coast or in the Lower Mainland, this may include a site visit prior to deposit to confirm access and installation requirements.

Next, the sauna must be placed on a flat, level surface. Suitable foundations include concrete pads, reinforced decks, gravel bases, pavers, or properly leveled concrete blocks.

If you require assistance assessing site access or preparing the installation area, please reach out and our team will be happy to help.

  • The listed price includes the sauna structure and heater. Additional costs to consider may include:

    • Shipping and crane rental fees

    • Foundation installation

    • Electrical hookup or chimney installation

    • Optional add-ons, such as Wi-Fi controls or upgraded lumber

    • Other sauna stoves not provided by us - we are happy to source these at no additional service cost, but the final price of the sauna will be adjusted accordingly

  • For electric heaters, electrical hookup services are available for an additional fee, provided by our in-house licensed electrician.

We do not install chimneys directly. To ensure safety, code compliance, and proper function, all chimney installations must be performed or inspected by a WETT-certified professional.

Our team provides full guidance on placement, clearances, and required materials to ensure your sauna stove is correctly installed, and we can coordinate with your WETT-certified installer as needed.

  • Yes! A key element of a true Finnish sauna is löyly - the steam created when water is poured over the hot stones. All of our sauna heaters, whether provided by us or sourced, are designed to safely allow water on the stones, making this an integral part of the authentic sauna experience.
